Page history last edited by Andrew Clement 2 years, 2 months ago

I am a Professor in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, where I coordinate the Information Policy Research Program. I also hold a cross-appointment (status-only) in the Department of Computer Science, from where I received my PhD in 1986. My research and teaching interests are in the social implications of information technology and human-centred systems development. I have written papers and co-edited books in such areas as: computer supported cooperative work; participatory design; workplace surveillance; privacy; women, work and computerization; end user computing; and the 'information society' more generally.

My recent research has focussed on public information policy, internet use in everyday life, digital identity constructions, public participation in information/communication infrastructures development, and community networking.

My current projects include:

Digitally Mediated Surveillance

Digitally Mediated Surveillance: From the Internet to Ubiquitous Computing, is an integrated research sub-project (IRSP II) of The New Transparency: Surveillance and Social Sorting project, based at Queens University. Go to the Digitally Mediated Surveillance (IRSP II) page.

Performing Identities

Informed by empirical studies of identity and identification practices from the perspective of individuals, the Performing Identities research project seeks to understand of how people perform and experience their individual identities in their everyday encounters with identification-based services and technologies. Go to the IDforum website. See also the affiliated, irony-laden Total Transparency Solutions project.

IXmaps - Mapping Internet Exchanges

IXmaps is an interactive tool under development designed to permit internet users to see the route that their data packets take across North America, with 'interesting' sites along the way highlighted.
