I'm a trade campaigner with the Council of Canadians, a non-partisan, grassroots citizens advocacy organization that works with its members and chapter activists to promote progressive policies on fair trade, clean water, energy security, public health care and other issues of social and economic concern to Canadians. While currently focused on trade agreements such as the Canada-Colombia FTA and Canada-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement, I continue to work on issues of border and travel security integration with the United States in cooperation with the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) and its contituent members. Starting in 2004, the Council of Canadians led grassroots opposition in Canada to the now defunct Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America -- a deepening of North American policy harmonization on regulatory and security measures. In 2007, as a researcher with the Council, I helped launch our Integrate This! website, posting regularly on security, privacy and surveillance issues, and in 2008/2009 worked closely with civil liberties groups, including Andrew Clement, to fight Ontario's 'enhanced' drivers licences.

The ICLMG has just issued an important and comprehensive report on the state of Canada-U.S. security collaboration on travel watchlists and other security databases. I'll be discussing these findings during the Surveillance and Civic Action event and hoping to connect with others who would like to put pressure on the federal government to be more accountable to those who get caught up in new security webs.
