I am a Post Doctoral Fellow with the Identity, Privacy and Security Institute in conjunction with the Faculty of Information & Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Toronto.
My research interests focus on themes of privacy, accountability and transparency in (video) surveillance and how “the face” may play a positive role in redressing some of the one-sided views of surveillance. My research includes the augmentation of identification documents with technologies, such as radio frequency ID (RFID) chips and biometrics like face recognition/comparison software and how these technologies change relationships of power between individuals and institutions. I am also interested in the promise of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PET’s) and how these may be integrated into surveillance systems to meet regulatory compliance and enhance the potential of supporting autonomy, dignity, due process, empowerment and social equity.
