I'm Brenda McPhail and I'm working on a PhD with Andrew Clement.

You can read my presentation notes for my five minute talk here.

My thesis work looks at the ways front line call centre workers experience identity and accountability in a ubiquitously surveilled environment. For this workshop, I'm interested in exploring the ways in which what I've learned about the ways surveillance affects people in the relatively closed environment of the workplace might help inform the ways we look at surveillance more broadly, and how that might translate into action, or if it does.

I've also worked on the Performing Identities Project headed by Andrew Clement, alongside Joseph Ferenbok and Karen Smith. Our work demonstrating the surveillance potential (and other potentials) of RFID enhanced driver's licenses may be the most immediately relevant part of the project for this workshop. We have also solicited identity stories from people, mostly stories about when things became complicated or problematic when using, losing, or acquiring identification documents, and I'm interested both from a methodological perspective and an advocacy one, in finding ways to make sure those voices, and others yet to be heard, can be somehow used to contribute to the policy and design debates around the formation of new kinds of ID.
